Crochet Bibs

Crocheting bibs are the cutest and possibly easiest gift you could give to any to-be-parent! To start, I got my inspiration from a nice blog right HERE. I would recommend adding some appliques like monster eyes and teeth, or flowers, or a mustache to make the bib look even cuter. This pattern is for babies 3 to 6ish months.

Materials:

  • 3 skeins of yarn - I used blue, white, and a blue variegated Red Heart Super Saver yarn (I washed it later so it wouldn't be so rough)
  • H/5mm hook (or whatever sized hook you used for whatever yarn you are planning to use)
  • Nice sized button that goes with the colors of the bib - I did a white button a little bit smaller than a quarter.
  • Tapestry needle to sew in the ends

Abbreviations Used:

   ch - chain
   sc - single crochet
   sl st - slip stitch
sc decrease - single crochet decrease. See my single crochet decrease post HERE

Colors:

     A - starting color (blue)
     B - second color (white)
C - third color (blue variegated)

Bib Pattern:

Using color A - chain 16 (16 sts)
R2: sc in the 2nd stitch from the hook. Ch 1, turn (16 sts)
R3: 2sc in the first stitch, sc in the next fourteen stitches, 2sc in the last stitch. Ch 1, turn (18 sts)
R4: sc in every stitch across, ch 1, turn. (18 sts)
R5: 2sc in the first stitch, sc in the next sixteen stitches, 2sc in the last stitch. (20 sts)
R6: sc across every stitch, ch 1, turn (20 sts)
R7 & 8: Using color B, sc across every stitch, ch 1, turn (20 sts)
R9 - 21: Using color C, sc across every stitch, ch 1, turn (20 sts)

From here, this is going to be the strap portion of the bib

R22: Using color C, sc 6, ch 1 turn (6 sts)
R23: sc decrease, sc in the next two stitches, sc decrease, ch 1, turn (4 sts)
R24 - R54: sc across every stitch, ch 1, turn (4 sts)
R55: sc decrease, sc decrease, ch 1, turn (2 sts)

This next part will make a loop for the bib so it'll be easier for the care taker to put on and take off the bib.

R56: ch 6, sl st in second stitch.

Leave a 4 to 5 finger tail (that's how I measure... I don't usually have a ruler around me) to weave the ends in once you have finished with the project

Using color C, sc all the way around the bib.

Now, the greatest part of this whole thing! Picking out the button and sewing it on.
I usually put on buttons that are smaller than a quarter, but bigger than a dime.

Sew the button between rows 23 and 24, and on the opposite side of where the strap is.

DONE!!

I found a precious model in my neighborhood. The bib was green, white, and purple but with this sun light the purple part of the bib seems to look a bit blueish...
